About the PSG

Founded in March 2006, the Pedagogy Study Group promotes the theory and practice of teaching music history at all levels, from non-major courses to graduate seminars. Members include teachers and graduate students from throughout the United States and Canada.

The Pedagogy Study Group was initiated by a group of AMS members who wished to address the roles of teaching and pedagogy in the Society. After holding an organizational meeting Washington, D.C. (2005), the PSG requested official recognition from the AMS Board, which the Board granted in March 2006. Each year, the PSG organizes a poster session, panel, or presentation at the annual meeting. In addition, the group provides support for Teaching Music History Day, a yearly event featuring papers, presentations, discussion sessions, and a keynote speaker.

Initiatives of the PSG include fostering discussion about teaching music history, sharing resources and teaching strategies, and providing a forum within the AMS for considering the role of teaching in our work as musicologists. AMS members who share these interests are invited to attend PSG events and support the group through membership. Join the PSG.
